Hopes that Wisconsin could soon legalize medical cannabis have taken a hit this week as a GOP Senator says there is ‘no appetite’ for it in the Senate.
As Business of Cannabis reported earlier this month, Wisconsin’s Assembly Republicans have announced plans to put forward a medical cannabis legalization bill in this legislative period but stipulate that it will be one of the ‘most restrictive’ in the US.
Now, Republican Senator Mary Felzkowski, who has been a proponent of medical cannabis reform, told CBD 58 that she doesn’t ‘see anything happening (with the bill) this session,’ amid a lack of appetite for its progression.
“I’m hoping that over the summer we can talk with our Assembly colleagues and hopefully come up with something that’s a compromise and then truly get this done once and for all for Wisconsin.”
This is largely due to stipulations within the strict proposals that dispensaries will be ‘state-run,’ which she suggests is a measure not supported by the majority of her colleagues.
It means that the bill is now unlikely to pass this February, as its supporters had hoped, without the Senate’s support.
